2 Crabs and a Funeral

Megan's teacher has a theory. I was in the classroom complaining about the smell of our new crabs and I asked her how long they will live. She said that this is a proven fact. If you hate the crabs, they will live 2 years or longer. If you are head over heels in love with the crabs, they will die within 3 days. Well great, I hate the crabs, I'm in for it for the next 2 years. BUT, silly me, I didn't take into account how much Megan loved the crabs. Lo and behold, two days later they both passed.
Aside from my elation, I have to feel a little bad. Megan came to us a month ago and asked us if she could have the crabs after they were done with them at school. We told her if she proved herself responsible with the pets we already have, she could have them. She fed, watered, and walked the dog every day and took her job really seriously. She earned the crabs. She came to me Saturday night, in tears, and informed me that Thumper was laying on her back. Yeah, not a good sign. Poor Thumper is deceased. But we still have Big Claw! Until the next morning. Perhaps he died of a broken heart?
We had to have a funeral. Sammy had just finished eating a pot pie, so they used the little tin to make a coffin.
I'm sure they were very comfortable in their little coffin. The girls added rocks, sand and water for them. :)

So sad!

Megan is learning why we have rocks for decoration. It is because the dirt is so dang hard to dig in!

A tribute is made....

Now we are left with just our grief.
Sometimes life's lessons can be hard to handle, but they make us stronger in the end!

This afternoon I went out back for a moment and caught Sam trying to dig them up so she could show her friends. It was 107 degrees today. Can you imagine? Yuck! I had to teach her that once we bury dead things, they need to stay buried. Another life lesson...

Oh, the looks on those girls faces!! That is true grief. =]

Now, help me figure out how to kill a lizard that we've had (from school, too) for over a year now...???

I think it's awesome that Sammy would dig 'em back up. I'd want to show my friends, too! =]

Ya know, the way you had them all wrapped up in aluminum foil in their little pan... you could just as easily have popped them in the oven for dinner, heh? Mmmmm crab!

Seriously though, tell Meg and Sam we're sorry they lost their little pets. Pet funerals are the worst!

So sorry for the girls. Life is so cruel sometimes. I'm sure those crabs would have turned pink being out in the heat.

Ok, I got conned into letting Jessica take home those crabs, too. They stunk up her room, and it stunk so bad I made her keep the crabs in the backyard. They didn't survive the 110 degree weather, either, and have also moved on to a better place. They sure were stinky!! Yuck!
(sorry girls :)
